How to Promote Reading for Pleasure

There is a misconception that ‘reading for pleasure’ just means learners opt to read voluntarily at home. If this was the case, it could be argued that school should focus on reading as and where it fits into the school curriculum, and that it is for parents/carers to promote ‘reading for pleasure’ at home. Whilst parents and carers certainly do have a role to play in this, learners will never truly become life-long readers unless there is a cohesive partnership between home and school. We know that reading habits are formed early, and often stick with learners for life, so getting this collective approach to reading right is crucial. Upon the completion of this course, it is hoped that the following learning outcomes/objectives will be reached: A clear understanding of what we mean by ‘reading for pleasure’ and why this is important An understanding of the various facets of reading provision that must be in place before you work on promoting reading for pleasure Understand a wide range of practical strategies for how to promote reading for pleasure, both in school and at home Each module will consist of a variety of pictures, diagrams or similar, and activities to inform you. There will also be a reference section where information will be available for further guidance. Through completing this course, you will have an opportunity to reflect on your current approach to promoting reading, identify elements of best practice that you could implement and understand how to do this effectively.
